a new release and what it means to write again

the wrong reciprocation is live in ebook today. this is a bittersweet day for me. it is both my thirty-something published piece of writing, and also my first indie/self-pub release in over five years. this is a story i’ve been wanting to tell for six years and it is, hands-down, the most unhinged thing i’ve every penned. the way i felt about an illicit seduction pales in comparison to the strong emotions the wrong reciprocation pulled outta me. to make it make sense, i have to back track a bit.

walk with me.

i began writing this immediately after i finished things hoped for in 2020, and was so excited about this insane ass story that my brain had conjured up. it was wicked and wild and downright delicious, but i wasn’t ready to go there yet so i shelved it and wrote fast breaker before picking this story back up, i hadn’t written anything in a while. nothing fictional, anyways.

i couldn’t.

that feels weird to say, but it’s the truth. i didn’t have writer’s block or anything of that nature, but sitting down to write a romance in the way i had done for nearly a decade wasn’t working for me anymore. i no longer had the same motivations. (that was something i’d discussed in therapy a few years ago and had yet to figure out a solution.) i began branching out. I started writing women’s fiction, a nonfiction collection of essays, an urban romance trilogy, a ya fantasy, and a paranormal…something that was less about love and more about connecting with the past. none of them looked alike and they didn’t resemble anything i’d every published before. and it was fun.

that’s how i feel about the wrong reciprocation. it was fun writing something so…weird. i was giggling maniacally and rubbing my hands together like a villain throughout the process and i loved that. publishing it feels like giving myself permission to do the weird and different things that are scratching at my brain. it’s a release day in many ways. thanks for being here.
